Should I Turn My Furnace Off Over the Summer?

As the weather warms up and your air conditioning takes over, you may be wondering whether it’s a good idea to turn your furnace off for the summer months. While you won’t need to heat your home, there are a few important factors to consider before switching it off completely.

At SC Comfort Heating and Cooling, we’re here to help you manage your HVAC system year-round and avoid unnecessary wear, high energy bills, or cooling disruptions.

1. Turn Off the Furnace, But Keep the Thermostat On

If your furnace uses a pilot light, turning it off during summer can help conserve energy. A constantly burning pilot light consumes fuel even when heat isn’t needed. Turning it off will cut this waste.

However, your thermostat should remain on, set to cool mode so your air conditioning can operate as needed.

For newer systems with electronic ignitions, there’s no pilot light to worry about. In these cases, the furnace can simply remain idle without any action.

2. Consider Humidity Control Needs

Some HVAC systems include humidity control features built into the furnace. In these cases, keeping the furnace on standby may be necessary to regulate indoor humidity levels.

Proper humidity control helps prevent mold, mildew, and excess moisture buildup—especially in tightly sealed or basement-heavy homes.

3. Schedule Off-Season Furnace Maintenance

Summer is a great time to give your furnace a little TLC. When the system is not in use, it’s easier (and often cheaper) to schedule routine maintenance.

Our technicians can:

  • Inspect internal components

  • Clean or replace air filters

  • Check for signs of wear and tear

This proactive approach ensures your furnace is ready for the first cold snap.

4. Improve Efficiency by Sealing Leaks and Closing Vents

While your furnace is idle, it’s a good idea to inspect your home for air leaks. Sealing these gaps boosts energy efficiency and reduces stress on your AC system.

Also, close vents in unused rooms to keep cool air where it’s needed most and prevent dust buildup in ductwork.

5. Avoid Shutting the System Down Completely

Turning off the pilot light is okay, but don’t disconnect power to the furnace entirely. Many air conditioning units rely on shared controls or circuitry with the furnace. Disconnecting it could interrupt your AC’s functionality or trigger error messages.

The Bottom Line

Yes, you can turn off the pilot light during summer to save energy. But keep your thermostat on, avoid disabling the system entirely, and schedule routine maintenance while it’s not in use.
